Recovering Fattie Tuesday: Something New

So I've been a strong-willed proponent of calorie counting as the miracle cure for fattie-ness but recently I've plateaued. 1600 calories gets rounded down to 1200 calories real fast when you start craving cookies and ice cream. So needless to say, the scale has been inching higher and my hopes and dreams of looking like a pre-baby Jessica Simpson are inching lower.

Obviously when something isn't working you have to make a change. My beloved calorie counting is no longer working (right now) so I'm changing it and my health buddy Hailey and I have come up with a competition.

We are starting a "lower carb" eating plan. I like this challenge for lots of reasons:

A.) It is a plan that, if successful, can be continued throughout my life (its not a "diet")
B.) It paves the way for a "paleo" style eating system that I'm really interested in implementing more into my diet
C.) I get to eat as many veggies as I want
D.) At the end of the day I don't feel deprived.

Our plan is simple. Eat mostly meat/veggies/fruit. 200 calories a day can be spent on dessert/sugar OR white potatoes OR bread/pasta/rice/cereal/ or anything else that would fall into the bottom category of the food pyramid... (which, like pluto, was phased out by the Obamas). ONCE a week we can have a treat over the 200 calorie limit but that is not a free day... just a free treat.

The best part of this plan is the motivation. We made a pact that if we break our limitations in this plan before Thanksgiving... then we have certain negative consequences.... for example... I have to jump into Utah Lake ... sans clothing... from shore to water. I can assure you I will not lose.

I'm sharing this to motivate. Recovering fattie-ness is not an easy road to travel. Sometimes you have to change pace and change scenery to have success. I don't even know if this will be a successful plan... but after a week I'm 5 lbs down and finding that a refreshing change of pace from the trends of the past two months.

I hope this helps.. sorry there are not more witty quips in this post... this is mostly straight business.

Here is a preview of what will happen if I lose... except I am not a young boy...

Fake Treats:
The only thing I hate about this plan is not getting a kick of sweetness after a meal. BUT Hailey introduced me to the cure for my ailing sweet tooth!!

Get individual cups of sugar-free jello and fat free whipped cream (in a spray can)... the sugar free jello has 10 calories and the whipped cream has 5 so for 15 calories you can tame your wild sweet tooth!!

  1. You can do the same thing with fat free chocolate pudding. Got that idea from the biggest loser. I miss you. I hope you have to jump in the lake naked, but try to wait until I'm there to do it. K?

  2. No! Ahhh! Kasie! Not you too! Arg. I have a serious beef with the paleo diet. I don't think it's healthy at all...but you're a sweetie and don't deserve my un-leashed tongue against it. Especially since my dad's the nutrition professor, not me. SO. Instead I will say another truth: I admire your determination and commitment to trying to live as healthy as you can!! I do think counting calories is the smartest thing you can do to lose weight, I agree with that 100%. If I were fancier I'd probably join weight watchers and have their app on my phone-as far as I can tell, that's all they're doing. They just call them 'points' instead of calories.

  3. haha well your dad is a nutritionist... so I think you have more of credible basis to disapprove of that!! I trust your dad more than the biased literature with skewed facts that I read. What I like about it is the push towards eating "foods with a short shelf life." I think in my mind I have to gear towards a more protein/veggie rich diet because in Kasie world 6 texas road house rolls is a serving size... with decreased grains I probably get about what a normal person should eat!! I appreciate the need for carbohydrates and with my limited understanding I understand the need for quick sugar conversion to aid in our body processes. We need to discuss this sometime though, because I know you have the scoop and i need to know the whole scoop!!

  4. Hey, Kasie! It's Melissa, your old buddy from Kansas. (I hope you remember me...) Just a thought, have you considered a vegetarian diet? Carbs are not the enemy! Animal food is and is linked to just about every disease. Protein needs are actually much less than most people think. You need about 1 gram for every 5lb of body weight. So the average American needs around 25-50g a day when they are getting 125g! Talk about overloading your kidneys. Anyway, just thought I'd share a bit if you were interested and tell you I love your blog! My sister told me about it and naturally I had to check it out. Best of luck with your goals. And remember, health is the thing to pursue, the weight-loss and healthy body size will follow. Come back and visit sometime. Oh yeah, I lost your phone number again, so call me, maybe. (I'm sorry, I really hate that song, but it kind of fit here!)
