The Barn

I had an epiphany recently that is comparable to when I discovered that the "D" on "Disney" wasn't a G, and when I figured out (last week) that Flo Rida spells "Florida." These were all pretty big discoveries in my mind but nothing more of a shock to me than when I figured out a couple years ago that not everyone has a full sized barn in their suburban back yards.

This is my dad:

My dad is a manly man. He wanted to build himself a barn to put his manly things in. So he built a barn. There is nothing wrong with that...

THE PROBLEM was that because I was so used to it being there I thought EVERYONE had a full sized barn in their backyards. I don't know how I came to this conclusion. I only had to look in my friends backyards and compare the size of their sheds with the size of our shed to know that ours was considerably bigger.

It wasn't until I was about 18 that all cylinders started firing in my head and I made all sorts of connections. I realized that FACT: most people did NOT have a giant barn in their backyards FACT: most sheds did NOT have attics and FACT: most barns that size held animals.

This was a jump off point for me. It was after this epiphany that everything else in my life started becoming clear... I didn't have a normal childhood.

  2. yeah... you definitely did not have a normal childhood, but what's so great about normal anyway? Not everyone has a bunny farm in their backyard either. Trampoline, yes. Swing set, yes. Barn and farm animals, nope.
